a Mary Heart in a Martha World are wonderful group supplements that encourages
us to view scripture in the context of a modern woman’s life. Most women today
have to work in order to help sustain their families, more woman are completing
higher education and still stepping into the role of mother and wife, making it
increasingly difficult for a woman to take time out for herself or for God. This
study does not marginalize the complexities of today’s life; rather it embraces
them and opens our eyes to the possibilities facing us. There are so many new
chances for intimacy with God that we have a hard time recognizing because of
our busy we are (Martha) that we sometimes struggle with our desire to lay
aside our duties and take up the posture of a disciple, and listen to what God
wants to say to us (Mary). Both elements are important, and Joanna does not portray
Martha as the commonly perceived nag, or uptight woman, but rather shows us
the heart of a servant who has opened her home, and is giving her all for Christ,
and who just needs a hand to hold her still and remind her that she too
deserves some time to just feast on Gods promises for her. Throughout the study
guide, we find tips on how to meditate on Gods words and promises in a world
full of distraction, tips on how to equip your Bible study area, tips on
reading and marking your Bible to enhance your study time, and so much more.
There are so many practical and helpful hints at how to strengthen your
relationship with God in a world full of commitments and schedules. Joanna Weaver really upholds her promise to help
us understand living room intimacy with God will never be found in kitchen
service, in her studies she really reaches into the heart of today’s woman and
shows no matter how busy we are, or how tired we feel, there is always a way to
sit at Jesus’ feet and feel His presence.
They were two of Jesus’s closest friends. Each had something
to offer Him. But one offered “the better part.”

Week 1: Introduction
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.

Having a Mary heart in a Martha world?
Is it really possible? More than ever, I am convinced it is. Jesus wants to meet with you as surely as He met with Mary and Martha that long-ago day in Bethany. He wants to reveal Himself to you, filling you with His presence and His
love so that His grace spills through you to a dry and thirsty world.
Though our initial introduction to Mary and Martha is only four verses long, I believe this brief story has the power to literally change our lives. So let’s begin! As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a
woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38–42)
